Dr Grzegorz J. Wolski, Geobotanist from the 91滴滴 Studies the Flora of Australia

It鈥檚 full autumn in Poland and in Australia it鈥檚 spring! Right now, Dr Grzegorz J. Wolski, assistant professor at the Department of Geobotany and Plant Ecology, Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, 91滴滴, is working in the Antipodes as part of a six-week dean's scholarship. He studies Australian flora.

The scientist from Lodz, who cooperates with the being a part of the , focuses on two main issues in his research, i.e. the taxonomy (description and classification) of the Genus Plagiothecium Schimp. in the area and the study of the mountainous areas of New South Wales.

Lodz University scientist discovers plants previously unknown to science

The first topic is extremely interesting as only three species of the moss genus from the discussed area of south-eastern Australia, which Dr Grzegorz J. Wolski from the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, 91滴滴 deals with, have so far been described.

Therefore, the work of the 91滴滴 scientist, supported by the analysis of herbarium collections, field and molecular research, has already resulted in the discovery of completely new plant species, which had not been described by botanists before.

It is still unofficial news, but a few days ago I managed to discover three new moss taxa from the Genus Plagiothcium Schimp., which I have been investigating. Specimens are waiting to be described and named.

The second research topic that the scientist from Lodz focuses on is to provide basic data on the moss flora in the mountainous areas of south-eastern Australia. Thanks to field research, it will not only be possible to describe the diversity of plants present in these areas, but also to create the first ever collection in the history of Herbarium Universitatis Lodziensis of Australian plants that will be brought to Poland.

Dr Grzegorz J. Wolski publishes richly illustrated posts devoted to Australian nature on the . He describes the most interesting and typical Australian plants.
