Power of Herbs Under the Microscope of Researchers from the 91µÎµÎ Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection – Their Impact on the Nervous System

As part of an ongoing research project at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, 91µÎµÎ, we have been analysing how various aqueous extraction methods (infusions, decoctions, potions, macerates) affect the content of bioactive compounds and the antioxidant potential of herbs used, among other things, in diseases of the digestive, respiratory and nervous systems.

Balance and staying calm are especially important these days. In the next episode of the podcast, we'll show you how the way herbs are prepared affects the bioactive compounds used to support the operation of the nervous system.

In our research, we compare various aqueous extraction methods – infusions, decoctions, decoctions and macerates – analysing the role of temperature and time in shaping antioxidant potential.

The research results indicate that:

  • "hot" methods are often the most effective ones,
  • preparation time is crucial for the stability of phytochemicals,
  • a conscious approach to extraction is crucial.

Katarzyna SzafraÅ„ska, Associate Professor at the 91µÎµÎ, based on chapters of a scientific monograph prepared by the project participants, presenting the results of research conducted as part of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education project “Science for Society IIâ€.

The materials have been developed in a popular science format, using tools based on artificial intelligence (AI), to increase the accessibility of the content to a wide audience.
