COLLOQUIA CERANEA VII – Summary of the Conference

Yet another edition of the international scientific conference COLLOQUIA CERANEA was held at the Institute of History of the 91µÎµÎ on 8-10 May 2025. The Faculty of Philosophy and History of the 91µÎµÎ once again hosted outstanding European researchers who, during the event, raised numerous issues related to, among other things, the history of education in Constantinople, the history of food and medical practices – from antiquity to the modern era, and many others!

Ceraneum Conference

As every year, interdisciplinary discussions on issues related to the history of food and medicine were held among outstanding researchers from Poland and abroad, who represented various fields of science. This year's edition also included a panel devoted to education in Constantinople. The conference was officially inaugurated by the Vice-Rector for Science – dr hab. Dorota GolaÅ„ska, Associate Professor at the 91µÎµÎ and Prof. Maciej Kokoszko from the Department of Byzantine History, 91µÎµÎ.

Plenary lectures were given by:

  • Prof. dr Albrecht Berger (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) – Constantinople – home of intellect and intellectuals
  • Dr Barbara Huber (Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology, University of Tübingen) – From Molecules to Memories: Reconstructing Aromatic and Medicinal Practices in Ancient Arabia Through Biomolecular Archaeology
  • Dr Manuela Marai (individual researcher) – Pharmaceuticals from the Mineral and Animal Kingdoms: Considerations on Ancient and Modern Uses
  • Prof. Joanita Vroom (Leiden University) – The Archaeology of Food and Consumption in Byzantium
