Head of the Department of Romance Literary Studies: prof. Anita Staro艅
The Department conducts scholarly investigations in the area of Romance literary studies, and its principal research directions include:
鈥 reception of antiquity in sixteenth and seventeenth-century France, ars emblematica in early modern Europe, Iconography and Iconology, ancient ars memorativa and its reception, ancient Rhetoric and its reception, history of ancient medicine and its reception, history of the medical book in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
鈥 short stories in sixteenth and seventeenth-century France (especially bloody tales, tragic stories, epitomes of tragic stories, miraculous stories, pious stories, diabolical stories, canards, discours bigarr茅), cosmographies, humanist tragedy, rewriting, echoes of religious wars in literature, theory and practice of exemplary discourse, humanistic rhetorical patterns, reception of Antiquity in humanistic thought, history of printing.
鈥 French and Italian Renaissance literature (especially French short narrative forms), literary relations between France and Italy during the Renaissance, satire, the reception of Antiquity in the humanistic thought
鈥 Italian literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: romanticism, decadence, Scapigliatura, works of the Risorgimento period and the post-Union period; the influence of fascist ideology on literary works; links between Italian literature and politics
鈥 French prose at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries: evolution of narrative techniques, thematic and stylistic considerations; Decadence and Symbolism; works of Octave Mirbeau and Rachilde; ecocriticism; zoopoetics
鈥 French poetry and poetic prose of the second half of the 19th century; evolution of literary forms; aesthetics of symbolism and decadence; ecocriticism and ecopoetics; feminist criticism; animal studies; literary works of Francis Poictevin
鈥 Feminist literature from the 19th and 20th century; literary genres and their ambiguity, especially in the context of women鈥檚 writing from that period; popular fiction and socially engaged novels; Camille Pert鈥檚 literary body of work
鈥 European theatre and drama of the 19th and 20th centuries, with particular emphasis on aesthetic and ideological transformations; theatre of social contestation; poetics of contemporary drama and its relations with tradition; theatrical avant-gardes and their influence on the development of stage language; the language of theatre and artistic performances in the context of semiotics and intermediality; contemporary Italian and French literature from a dramaturgical and comparative perspective; comparative literature, with particular emphasis on the connections between literature and theatre; theatre as a didactic tool in teaching foreign languages (French and Italian); theory and practice of literary translation and theatrical translation, with particular emphasis on stage adaptations and the issues of cultural transposition; multilingualism in theatre and the role of foreign languages in shaping modern drama and stage performance.
